About Me

This is the homepage of Michael Ager.  I am a Professional Theatre Production Manager, based in London, working across all scales of shows in the subsidised theatre sector. I am a full member of the ABTT and a committee member of the Production Managers forum.  I live with my wife Emily in Coulsdon, on the London Surrey boarder.

I recently finished a 22 month contract working as a Deputy Production Manager at the National Theatre on London’s South Bank, where I worked alongside the Production Managers in all three theatres; the Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman. The role of a Deputy PM at the national involves writing risk assessments and other health and safety documents, sourcing scenic materials  and equipment, negotiating with production departments and contractors, and maintaining communication between the artistic  team and all production departments.

Before joining the NT I was Production and Technical Manager of the Bush Theatre, in West London.  I ran the technical department; line managing two full time technicians, engaging freelance staff, and managing equipment and technical facilities maintenance.  I also Production Managed all of our in-house productions in the 150 seat flexible main house theatre and 60 seat flexible studio theatre.

Between 2013 and 2016 I worked as a Freelance Production Manager with clients across London and the UK including: The Gate Theatre, Young Vic, Frantic Assembly, Southwark Playhouse, Nuffield Theatre Southampton, The Print Room, Two’s Company Productions, Spell Bound Productions and Coney.

Between 2007 and 2013 I was full-time at the Young Vic Theatre working as Production Manager and technician for the Taking Part Department.  This department produce the company’s work with Young People, Schools and Colleges, Local Community and Young Directors.  I Production Managed and provided technical support for all taking part department shows as well as working as Deputy Production manager on professional productions when required.  In 2012 I participated in the “Step Change Programme“, a professional development programme run by the National Theatre.

I began my professional career in 2006, working as a full-time Technician for Battersea Arts Centre in South London. Whilst at BAC I had the privilege of working as a Production Electrician on Punchdrunk’s acclaimed production of “Masque of the Red Death”.

Between 2003 and 2006 I studied BA Theatre Design and Production at Trinity College Carmarthen, achieving a 1st Class honours degree.

All of the shows that I have worked on are listed in Past Projects and photos of many shows are available in the Gallery.

While the majority of my work is in the field of production management, I am also a highly competent technician in the fields of lighting, sound, stage and scenic construction. I am currently looking to take on full time or freelance work from September 2021 onwards.  If you are in need of a Production Manager or technical support for for any upcoming projects please get in touch.
